The Fear of Failure

The fear of failure is the most deeply triggering emotion I have experienced as an adult. As a mother, that fear mutates to the idea that every decision I make can create a wound for my daughters that will change how they perceive and approach the rest of their lives. The possibility that I can turn them into balls of rage that finish each day by assuming fetal position in a dark corner of their room while shutting the world out.

There is no situation in which this fear is more prevalent than those dreaded few days right before we depart on a new adventure. Right before we pack, right before we meet our friends for the last loving yet quivering exchange, right before the excitement when we realize that this is actually happening.

New Year and Being Present

Photo Dec 31 11 52 34 PM Time has a way of swallowing us whole. It is as if, when we blink without intention, we wake up to notice time has gone with a whisper of what was lived or leaves behind a vague memory. Living on the road is not like this though. Life as a nomad is absent of time, every moment is lived with intention and every second is remembered as a complete moment that has been fully lived. My theory is that when we try to adapt to the mundane, the only way to cope is to disconnect, at least that has been my experience.

Coping with Circumstances

Photo Jun 06 8 40 04 AM There are a countless number of lessons to be learned on the road. We are literally and figuratively exploring uncharted territory every day. So we are faced with life lessons and opportunities for personal growth at every turn. By far my favorite of these lessons is learning the ability to adapt to new and unpredictable situations. Having to cope with the unexpected isn’t easy and, when you are on the road, 75% of our encounters are random by nature. There are a few ways I handle this as a parent.

"Single mom" … on the road

Photo May 18 7 27 33 AM I’ve been asked why I point out that I am a single mom on my posts many times. And it’s intriguing to hear the thoughts that are provoked by my title. The most common one is the idea that being single and a mom denote a “dead beat” dad. It has also been seen as a way to look for a new prospective partner. Even though I can see and understand where these ideas come from, I thought it would be reasonable to take a moment to point out the actual reason I use the term single mom.

Checking in

Photo May 18 9 16 33 AM As parents, we tend to choose what kind of parent we want to be and then adapt through trial and error. Children are ever changing so parenting should always change along with them. What they need as babies will not be the same thing they need as toddlers or as pre-teens. For me, my parenting has evolved but holding on to the same core believes. Giving my children a voice has always been a priority for me. I grew up in the final stages of the era that claimed that “children should be seen and not heard”. So the opposite holds true for my parenting. I will give my kids every opportunity they need to express themselves. One of my children prefers talking things out and the other prefers sitting quietly until she’s able to work through her thoughts. I’m somewhere in between the two techniques but I make sure I give them room to choose their own type of self-expression as I guide them through how to cope with their surroundings.

In the search to offer her children an education beyond their usual surroundings, and seeking to exist outside her chronic illness, Karen Matamoros created a life of exploration. From traveling the world to diving within, resetting boundaries, curating an intentional & artistic life, and redefining what entrepreneurship while being a homeschooling single mom looks like. She uses her artistic expression to paint her world with intentionality, from curating each piece of her home and garden to organizing magical lived experiences. Although an entrepreneur her whole life, she started to truly live her passion when she sold her 6-figure business in 2017, and set out to travel full-time with her two daughters for many years before settling in Miami to create a cozy home for her children to grow into young women.
